Lamps shades may not be that unique as a gift idea, but there are lamp shades and there are lamp shades. Here's one I got at a Marden's store that sells salvaged items at bargain prices. There have several stores throughout Maine, USA so if you're lucky enough to live around those areas drop in one of the stores. They have surprising items - always!
